The Origins and History of the BBL

The BBL was created to popularise cricket to a wider audience and to attract new fans, especially families and young people.   This is a two-over period where a batting team can choose to restrict fielding to two players outside the inner circle;

  Bash Boost

  This is a bonus point given to the team leading after 10 overs;

• 

  X-factor Player

  Possibility to replace a player from the starting 13 after half of the first innings;

• 

  Bat Flip

  Used instead of the coin toss to determine the order of play;

• 

  Modified timed-out rule

  A new batsman must be ready to play in 75 seconds, otherwise the opponent has a chance to knock him out before the first hit.

Prize money and attendance

As interest has grown, so has the prize money. In recent years, it has totalled $890,000, of which $450,000 goes to the champion. Matches usually attract large numbers of fans, with some matches being visited by over 50,000 spectators. The average attendance stays between 18,000-20,000, and this is one of the best among the T20 leagues in the world.

The Most Successful BBL Teams

Some BBL teams stand out strongly for their results among others. The most titled team is Perth Scorchers. They have won five championship titles. Sydney Sixers have also shown a great performance (3 titles). Also, the Brisbane Heat were crowned champions twice. The other teams have taken the title once each, except for Melbourne Stars.

Last season, the Hobart Hurricanes team won the title for the first time. They beat the Sydney Thunder in the final. Mitchell Owen has become the most valuable player, who scored 108 points.
